At Ratby Primary School we really value creativity and imagination and we recognise that Art and Design stimulates these. Our Art and Design curriculum provides a range of experiences and a wealth of knowledge for children of all ages; it allows and encourages them to understand and respond to the world in a different way. Art and Design enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, line, texture, form and pattern by using a range of different materials and processes.
We also encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers. Pupils use sketchbooks at Ratby Primary to great effect to explore and reflect upon all areas of the Art curriculum as well as giving them opportunities to be creative and unique when developing their own style and inspirations. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design and what has inspired themselves and others. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures which we are keen to share with our pupils.
Alongside an engaging theoretical and reflective practical curriculum, Ratby hosts many art themed days and activities, takes part in art based competitions, visits theatres and exhibitions and hosts an Art Club after school. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches our world and at Ratby Primary School and we are passionate about encouraging children to engage in this.
