Computing

At Ratby Primary School, our aim is for children to achieve a mastery of Computing that empowers them to pursue careers in the field and apply technology effectively in their daily lives, all while maintaining a balanced relationship with technology. Our approach involves instilling our children with a sense of responsibility and mindfulness when using technology, understanding the impact of their actions and words on others.

We ensure that our curriculum for Computing is designed to foster skill progression, building upon their prior knowledge and experiences. Following a sequence of learning throughout each year group, children will develop proficiency and familiarity with a wide array of technologies. This not only enriches their learning prospects but also equips them to use technology creatively and problem-solve across various subjects, ensuring continuous progress in their knowledge and understanding of Computing.

Our Kapow Computing Scheme aims to promote a love of technology and aims to nurture children’s understanding of its capabilities and potential. Tinkering with software is integral to our approach, fostering confidence when encountering new technology. Our goal is to develop pupils’ digital competence and transferable skills, preparing them for the future workplace, while also promoting responsible online citizenship.

At Ratby Primary School, we strive to embed Computing across the curriculum. All year groups are taught computing each half term. We have a class set of laptops and iPads which can be used in Computing lessons and across the wider curriculum. Children’s work is saved on the school’s network drive and in their Learning Journey books.

In addition to this, we aim to develop Computing further through:

  • Digital Leaders in each class
  • Computing Club
  • Internet Safety week
  • Online Safety assemblies
  • Warning Zone for Year 6 pupils

We follow a broad and balanced Computing curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. The Kapow Computing scheme is designed around three strands:  Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. This enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets outlined in the National Curriculum.
