At Ratby, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) British Values and Equalityare the fabric of our school and run through the day-to-day life here at Ratby Primary School. We instil a culture of respectability and responsibility and it is embedded in not only the lessons we teach but also in dedicated well-being time, assemblies, roles and responsibilities of children and staff, visitors in school, democratic decision making and supporting our community. We support children to understand how they develop individually and within groups, placing emphasis on good citizenship, morality and cultural collaboration as they grow into mature and responsible citizens. Our staff provide children with a comprehensive understanding of modern British life ensuring they are shown empathy and understanding towards others as well as knowing their own self-worth and belief. Our children know and understand the role they have to play in their wider school life and we build on this knowledge and understanding to ensure they have the skills and attributes to fulfil this role.
How do we teach PSHE?
Our curriculum is tailored to the needs of our children, taking into consideration localised support. Our PSHE curriculum builds on prior learning by following the progressive frameworks outlined in the Twinkl PSHE scheme of work. The scheme of work covers the following strands:
- Health and Well-Being
- Living in the Wider World
- Relationships
Within the curriculum, we also aim to improve children’s understanding of staying safe around drugs and medicine, being more financially aware and having sound economic decision-making skills. Children have the opportunity to learn more about speaking out and staying safe as part of the NSPCC roadshow and this allows children to understand behaviour that may concern them. We ensure that children are familiar with their trusted adults and empower them to speak out if they have worries or concerns.
Everyone’s Welcome
We have incorporated the ‘Everyone’s Welcome’ programme within our PSHE Curriculum.
We are committed to preparing our children for life in the diverse society, which is modern Britain today. We are proud to be an open and inclusive school, which is strongly reflected in our core vision, values and ethos. ‘Everyone’s Welcome’ is a whole school approach that uses the ‘No Outsiders’ resources and framework to teach children about equality and diversity, in line with British Values, Ofsted guidelines and the Equality Act (2010). By Year 6, children will have studied 42 books which discuss the nine protected characteristics, enabling children to understand that all children are unique and special and that sharing who they are is vital to encourage understanding, acceptance and respect of others within our community.
The 3rs
We work hard to ensure the 3rs: being respectful, responsible and ready to learn underpin our school ethos and support and develop the children in school. We use these within all aspects of school life to embed a clear understanding of the expectations of our children.
