Design Technology

At Ratby Primary School, our aim is to inspire children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products, which link to our topics. We provide our children with design criteria so that they design and make purposeful, functional and appealing products that meet the needs of themselves or other users.  The children use a variety of tools, equipment and components to make their products. They learn a range of practical skills and knowledge to make products. The children evaluate their products using the design criteria to see whether their product meets the needs of themselves or other users.

Children are given opportunities to create products in different areas of design and technology involving;

  • structures
  • mechanical systems
  • textiles
  • cooking and nutrition
  • electrical systems

The principles of health and safety are taught as an integral part of DT lessons so that children understand the importance of this when they are making their products. The children are inspired by learning about key individuals in design and technology such as engineers, designers, chefs and architects.

In cooking and nutrition, children are equipped with an understanding of what a healthy and varied diet is. They learn about where food comes from and what time of year different types of food grows. They prepare and cook a variety of food using lots of cooking techniques.

We run a STEM club for Year 3 and 4 pupils. We have specially selected DT ambassadors that help to support children in lessons, attend our STEM club and will help deliver assemblies.
