PSHE and RSE

At Ratby, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) British Values and Equality are the  fabric of our school and run through the day-to-day life here at Ratby Primary School. We instil a culture of respectability and responsibility and it is embedded in not only the lessons we teach but also in dedicated well-being time, assemblies, roles and responsibilities of children and staff, visitors in school, democratic decision making and supporting our community. We support children to understand how they develop individually and within groups, placing emphasis on good citizenship, morality and cultural collaboration as they grow into mature and responsible citizens.  Our staff provide children with a comprehensive understanding of modern British life ensuring they are shown empathy and understanding towards others as well as knowing their own self-worth and belief.  Our children know and understand the role they have to play in their wider school life and we build on this knowledge and understanding to ensure they have the skills and attributes to fulfil this role.

How do we teach PSHE?

Our curriculum is tailored to the needs of our children, taking into consideration localised support.  Our PSHE curriculum builds on prior learning by following the progressive frameworks outlined in the Twinkl PSHE scheme of work. The scheme of work covers the following strands:

  • Health and Well-Being
  • Living in the Wider World
  • Relationships

Within the curriculum, we also aim to improve children’s understanding of global citizenship, RSE, mental wellbeing, British values, personal safety including staying safe around drugs and medicine, being more financially aware and having sound economic decision-making skills.  Children have the opportunity to learn more about speaking out and staying safe as part of the NSPCC and this allows children to understand behaviour that may concern them.  We ensure that children are familiar with their trusted adults and empower them to speak out if they have worries or concerns

Everyone’s Welcome

We have incorporated the ‘Everyone’s Welcome’ programme within our PSHE Curriculum. We are committed to preparing our children for life in the diverse society, which is modern Britain today.  We are proud to be an open and inclusive school, which is strongly reflected in our core vision, values and ethos.  ‘Everyone’s Welcome’ is a whole school approach that uses the ‘No Outsiders’ resources and framework to teach children about equality and diversity, in line with British Values, Ofsted guidelines and the Equality Act (2010). By Year 6, children will have studied 42 books which discuss British values and the nine protected characteristics, enabling children to understand that all children are unique and special and that sharing who they are is vital to encourage understanding, acceptance and respect of others within our community.

Our Vision

At the heart of everything we do at Ratby Primary School, we:

Build on the past, embrace the present and prepare for the future.

We honour the experiences and lessons that have shaped our journey, using them as a strong foundation for growth. We stay grounded in the present, fostering innovation, collaboration and purpose in every action we take.  With eyes on the horizon, we proactively shape a future that is sustainable, inclusive and full of opportunity.  Together, we move forward—rooted in legacy, driven by purpose and inspired by possibility.

Our School

At Ratby Primary School, we provide high quality education in a safe and inclusive environment that inspires a love of life-long learning.’ We believe every child is special, full of potential and ready to shine.

We encourage our pupils to:

Reflect and learn from the past by remembering the stories, people and lessons they teach us.

Embrace the present by engaging in rich learning opportunities and being responsible members of our school community.

Prepare for the future by building confidence, showing curiosity and resilience whilst following our dreams.

Together, we are all kind and respectful every single day.

PSHE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

From September 2021, Relationships Education became a statutory requirement in all primary schools, meaning that every school must deliver this content. It is considered best practice to regularly review a school’s provision to ensure that teaching reflects both the needs of pupils and changes within society. This review process has recently been taking place at our school as part of the new guidance from September 2026.

Here at Ratby, PSHE and RSE are taught through the Twinkl scheme, which integrates both subject areas into a cohesive and progressive programme. Our lessons are designed to equip children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to manage the challenges of modern life. Our approach to teaching PSHE and RSE is child-centred, ensuring that all content is appropriate to the age and developmental stage of our pupils. The curriculum covers important areas that support pupils in making informed decisions about their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships and financial understanding, both now and in the future. The scheme of work fully meets the statutory requirements set out by the Department for Education, while also including additional, non-statutory elements of sex education.  We may also tailor the scheme by adding in additional lessons or having external partners deliver lessons to meet the needs of our pupils as we believe this approach best supports their personal development, helping them to grow into confident, well-rounded individuals and responsible members of society.
